  • Only 13% of population have access to potable water

  • Only 6% have access to electricity

  • Deforestation from years of cutting trees for energy, agriculture, and building use

o   Plantation system used for coffee, indigo, tobacco, and sugarcane

  • Use of charcoal for energy led to soil degradation

  • Country in complete disarray after Earthquake, and need money and guidance to rebuild

 

 


Water Problems

  • Most people simply fill cans with water from nearby springs/rivers (which have been tested and found contaminants)

  • No protection for springs

  • Severe soil erosion

o   River is expanding into the floodplain yearly

o   When storms hit, floods and devastation are more severe

Current Infrastructure/Building Practices in Haiti

  • No building inspections, engineers, or standards

  • Weak/missing reinforcements

  • Buildings on steep slopes

  • Unstable foundations

  • Poor designs/materials/techniques

  • Primarily use masonry/bricks to build, which are not reinforced

  • January: 73-88 degrees

  • July: 77-95 degrees

  • Rainy season: April-June & October-November

  • Drought and floods often caused by deforestation
